background

In this project I've filed and organized alphabetically all the spam words that came to me - uninvited - via email during November 2004. Now they are public again - and available for you.

On the installation page you cand download pieces for a spam installation, view the text files of the spam word listing in words section, download spam-sound read by computer voice in mp3 format, get usable banners, shout your own spam or join the spam army in downloads/uploads section.

why?

Polyanna thinking. There's got to be a way to turn annoying things to something else. So why not make art of it? But really, something strange has happened. If I don't get any spam for a couple of hours I start to wonder if there's something wrong with my connection.
In May 2003 the 55,1% of all the mail was spam according to Messagelabs (a company who offers email services for businesses, about 150 000 000 emails went through their email servers in 2003. According to Symantec's Biannual Internet Threat Report about 30 000 computers were turned into spamming machines each day between January and June in 2004. The peak of 2004 was propably August 30th in which the amount of spam was 90% of all mail according to FrontBridge Technologies. According to them the amount of spam grew 1600% after the year 2000. However, in December 2004, the worlds biggest internet operator America Online noted that amount of the spam had dropped considerably: in 2003 they deleted 2 400 000 000 spam mails a day at it's worst and in the end of the year 2004 only 1 200 000 000.
Spam gets everywhere. And now it even gets to places without computer.
